Lemming Film

The Material Memory

A documentary about people who try to keep their memories alive by cherishing the material witnesses of these memories. The wedding suit that lies unworn on the attic for years. Or the pile of clothes of a deceased family member; T-shirts full of holes that bring back long passed tender moments. What seems worthless to the outsider turns out to be invaluable for the owner.

Renate Zentschnig, Co Waterman and Clara Smit talk about their lives through specific clothes that have an important emotional value for them. Will they ever be able to part from their clothes? From the perspective of the frayed collar and the missing button the film unravels the bigger picture. The viewer gets carried along the most important moments in a human life; growing up, getting married, getting older, looking back and saying farewell.
